Community college program helps parents of young children reach their academic goals

When Jalisa Solivan got pregnant in college midway through the semester, she dropped out. Her baby’s father, now her husband, finished his degree while she took care of their son, Nathan. Now, years later, she’s found her second chance at a career. In its second year, Frederick Community College’s Parents Lead program offers scholarship money and flexible hybrid courses that are taught partially online to parents with young children. It was just what these parents needed — they said they found classrooms of students with experiences like their own and support from instructors who understood the demands of their family lives.
