Federal judge: Baltimore’s climate litigation belongs in state court

Baltimore’s lawsuit alleging oil companies concealed dangers and misinformed the public about climate change belongs in state court, a federal judge ruled Monday. U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander issued an order remanding the case because she determined removal to federal court was improper. Hollander immediately stayed the order, as the defendants requested in April, to allow them to appeal to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The city’s lawsuit alleged fossil fuel companies concealed risks and engaged in campaigns to misinform the public about their products for decades after learning they were contributing to climate change.
