Gov. Larry Hogan announced Saturday that a case of the South African variant of the coronavirus ( B.1.351 variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus) has been confirmed in Maryland. The patient is an adult living in the Baltimore metro region. “The individual has not traveled internationally, making community transmission likely. Comprehensive contact tracing efforts are underway to ensure that potential contacts are quickly identified, quarantined, and tested,” Hogan said in a news release.
