Students are heading back to classrooms all over the D.C. area and that includes thousands going to community colleges this fall. A new study shows the region has some of the best in the country. Maryland is the No. 1 state in the entire country for community colleges, according to a recent WalletHub study. “What Maryland does well as far as schools is they tend to offer high median salaries after graduation,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo told WTOP, saying many of the schools saw graduates get initial jobs starting in the high $40,000-range.
The Maryland State Fair, the state’s largest celebration of all things agriculture, opens its annual three-weekend run on Thursday. More than a half-million people are expected to attend. A new policy is coming to select Giant Food locations: stores will not allow any unaccompanied minors in the evenings. The new policy states that shoppers under the age of 18 may not enter without an adult after 6 p.m. A spokesperson with Giant released the following statement: “Giant Food has initiated a new policy at select stores that are experiencing high shrink to mitigate the unprecedented levels of product theft that have become unsustainable for our business. Starting August 22nd at select stores, shoppers under the age of 18 may not enter without an adult after 6 p.m.”

There were three community information sessions in August ahead of the first day of school to help parents understand the latest transportation information.

Last Wednesday marked another bad day for the administration of Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski. The county’s Board of Appeals delivered a stunning rebuke to the administrative law judge that Olszewski promoted to be head of the Office of Administrative Hearings. This comes just weeks after The Brew and Baltimore Sun reported that top Olszewski aides engineered a secret $83,675 payout to a firefighter with personal and business ties to the county executive.
