Alaska Air clears a big hurdle in its proposed merger with Hawaiian Airlines
Alaska Air is one step closer to acquiring Hawaiian Airlines after the U.S. Department of Justice chose not to challenge the $1 billion deal that the carriers say will create a company better able to serve travelers. Alaska Air announced in December that it would pay $18 in cash for each share of Hawaiian. The deal includes $900 million in debt held by Hawaiian Airlines.
GMC expects to outsell its electric truck competitors as it launches new Sierra pickup
General Motors’ premium GMC brand wants to become the leader in all-electric truck sales for U.S. consumers as it launches its new electric Sierra pickup. The Sierra EV joins electric versions of the Hummer, including an SUV and pickup, in GMC’s electric “truck” lineup. The automaker is expecting the Sierra will become GMC’s top seller for its EV lineup as lower-priced variants become available next year.
Salmon farm operation to bring 300 jobs to Cecil County
A high-tech, indoor Atlantic salmon farming operation is in the works for a portion of the former Bainbridge Naval Training Center in Port Deposit. Norwegian firm AquaCon is negotiating with the Bainbridge Development Corp. Some farmers say proposed limits on agritourism are too restrictive
Frederick County Council Member Jerry Donald introduced two bills on Tuesday that he hopes will prevent agritourism enterprises from disrupting nearby communities, but some farmers think the proposals go too far. One bill would enumerate the conditions under which agricultural buildings can be opened to the public, while the other would limit the kinds of activities allowed as part of agritourism enterprises.

Cohen’s ‘anti-slumlord’ bill moves forward in Baltimore City Council
A renters’ rights bill first introduced by Baltimore City Council President hopeful Zeke Cohen in 2023 will advance to a full council vote after clearing a major hurdle on Tuesday. Resuscitated after months of negotiations, the bill, called the Strengthening Renters’ Safety Act, sailed through an Economic and Community Development committee hearing with several amendments that council members praised as sensible and favorable to the city’s tenant class.
