Gov. Moore calls for ‘full investigation’ after Baltimore sanitation worker’s heat death
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore on Tuesday called for a “full investigation” into the heat-related death of a Baltimore sanitation worker, weighing in amid a growing chorus of criticism of the city’s Department of Public Works. Moore said said he wants government employees “to know that their safety is going to be of the highest priority,” though he declined to disclose the individuals or agencies involved in investigating the incident.
Baltimore Peninsula in the running for soccer stadium site
The Baltimore Peninsula development has replaced a city park as one of two finalists to potentially host a new D.C. United minor league soccer stadium. The Maryland Stadium Authority approved a change for a study regarding a new soccer stadium in Baltimore that swapped out Swann Park for a site in the massive South Baltimore development at its meeting Monday.
Moore ‘considering all options’ in ruling on 2023 gun law
Maryland’s top elected official is “considering all options” following a ruling last week by a federal judge that struck down parts of a 2023 firearms law. That law, passed in response to the U.S. Supreme Court U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, set limits on where firearms could be legally carried. The bill was challenged in court the same day that it was signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore (D).
M&T Bank Stadium’s evolution follows recent trend: Private luxury, if you can swing it
There is now no mistaking the sweetest seats in M&T Bank Stadium. The Blackwing suite area has marbled counters, honeycomb tile flooring, mammoth-screen TVs stacked end-to-end across long corridors. The lavish lounge area feels more like the lobby of a swanky hotel than a football stadium. On Monday, the Ravens took the media on a tour of the first part of a three-phase makeover to the 26-year-old stadium, including the Blackwing, the clear crown jewel of this first stage.
Presidential and congressional candidates must address the national debt
Last week, the U.S. Treasury announced that the gross national debt reached $35 trillion – that’s more than $266,000 per U.S. taxpayer. To put it in perspective, it would take 22 years to pay off this debt if every family in the country donated $1,000, per month. Worse, it is projected to double over the next 10 years! Folks, this is a national crisis.
Md. brothers turn passion project into thriving tequila business
Donta Henson had no previous experience running a business in the vast and competitive alcohol industry, but that didn’t stop him and his brother from jumping in feet first when they decided they wanted to launch their own brand of tequila. “This is something that we just wanted to do really as a passion project,” Henson said. “We hit the ground running from the start.”
Moore joins former Sen. Elizabeth Dole to help veterans and their caregivers
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore joined former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole on Tuesday to announce that Maryland will work with her foundation to support military and veteran caregivers. Moore, who served as a paratrooper and captain in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, said joining the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Hidden Heroes campaign will help raise awareness about resources available for families of veterans and to expedite those resources to them.
In Maryland Senate race, the more debates the better
Maryland voters must know by now that the stakes are high in the U.S. Senate race between Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Gov. Larry Hogan. It’s within the realm of possibilities that the outcome could tip the balance of Senate leadership from Democratic to Republican if Hogan wins. So, under these extraordinary circumstances, is it really too much to expect these candidates — both experienced public speakers and campaign veterans — to square off in multiple debates?
MD unemployment claims backlog remains, but officials see progress ahead
While Department of Labor officials say that new leadership and plans for procedural changes have put the state on track to solve a yearslong backlog of unemployment insurance claims, claimants and their attorneys, who have yet to see definitive progress following a 2022 settlement, remain dubious. The top Republican lawmaker in Annapolis has also called on his fellow legislators to bring in labor officials for a hearing about why they “habitually cannot deliver this critical service.”
