For over a decade, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. has made it a point to engage with his constituents. He’s met them after panels at nearby colleges. He’s grabbed coffee with them at local senior homes. He’s knocked on their doors and chatted with them about the future of the region. His work has paid off.

The University of Maryland School of Social Work is offering in-state tuition to D.C. residents enrolled in its Master of Social Work program, as part of a push to help address a shortage of social workers in the region. The change, effective this fall, offers in-state credit prices to D.C. residents participating in either the online program, or in UMSSW’s locations in Baltimore or Shady Grove.

There is no secret to the Navy football team’s 6-0 start. There might be no secrets to Navy football at all. A black gate surrounds the practice field on the Naval Academy’s campus in Annapolis, but in an era of paranoia about spying, Navy practice is open to the media. The athletes, while accomplished, don’t have freakish measurements or run 4.2-second 40-yard dashes.

Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin said Wednesday that former President Donald Trump, who’s running again as a Republican, hasn’t signed key documents that other presidential nominees have adhered to in the past to assure an “orderly transition of power” if they are elected. Raskin, a Montgomery County Democrat and his party’s ranking member on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, wrote the former president Wednesday urging him “to put the public’s interest in maintaining a properly functioning government above any personal financial or political interests you may perceive in boycotting the official transition law and process.”

Early voting is underway in Maryland and lasts until Oct. 31 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Registered voters can vote at any center in their county of residence — as can those eligible to register to vote after registering at a center.

My grandparents Ed and Arnell Streeter were not your typical doomsday preppers clad in camo living in a bunker. They were nice federal government retirees born in rural Arkansas, living for their gardens, grandkids and their daytime stories. They were also survivors of the Great Depression, stocking their Prince George’s County home with nonperishables such as canned soups, sardines and saltine crackers, and two full refrigerators and a giant freezer stocked with enough meat and fresh-caught fish to get through an entire winter. You weren’t gonna catch Granddaddy and Grandma unprepared.

One can scarcely blame Mayor Brandon Scott for having frustrations with the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, the 501(c)3 nonprofit that functions as the city’s arts council, events center and film office. Ever attended Artscape, the Baltimore Book Festival, even the Baltimore Farmers’ Market or experienced the various landmarks, galleries and art installations it underwrites? How about the Inner Harbor New Year’s Eve fireworks?

Maryland’s Senate race is one of a handful of federal races poised to decide which political party wins control over Congress. That means there’s plenty of polling, as the candidates and other interested parties search for indications of which way voters will go. Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan and Democrat and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks are vying for the open seat, along with Libertarian Party candidate Mike Scott.

 

ATCC, a biological materials management and standards organization with research and technology centers in Gaithersburg and Germantown, Wednesday received a C06 Research Facilities Construction Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to build a new biomanufacturing suite at its headquarters in Manassas, Virginia.

Early voting starts Thursday in Maryland, with former governor Larry Hogan (R) and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) competing for the state’s open Senate seat and all eight congressional district seats on the ballot, including three where the incumbents are not seeking reelection. In an election year where women’s reproductive rights have factored heavily into several races, Maryland voters will also decide whether the state should enshrine reproductive choice in the Maryland Constitution.
