The Unified Command team used the crane barge Chesapeake 1000 for some heavy lifting Sunday at the wreckage site of the Key Bridge in the Patapsco River. The Chesapeake 1000 is the largest floating crane on the Eastern Seaboard. The crane is being used to move a large piece of supporting steel from the bridge that will assist in opening a limited access channel that will allow one-way ship traffic to the Port of Baltimore.
The magnitude of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and the closure of the Port of Baltimore is beginning to sink in for a variety of business owners in Baltimore, such as Nicholas Johnson from Su Casa Furniture in Fells Point. Before the bridge’s collapse, Johnson wasn’t aware that the Port of Baltimore was a main hub for plywood. He worries how this may affect his furnishing business, but also how the port’s closure may impact Baltimore’s small business economy.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has amended several of his state campaign finance reports to correct errors regarding five individual contributors and issued refunds to four other donors after The Baltimore Sun reported the campaign accepted donations above the $6,000 maximum limit from nine entities. The two amended reports were filed Saturday.
Baltimore Councilman Zeke Cohen holds a sizable lead in the race for City Council president, leading nearly all demographics of Democratic voters as he challenges incumbent President Nick Mosby, according to a new poll for The Baltimore Sun, the University of Baltimore and FOX45. The poll gauging interest for the Democratic primary, released Monday, shows Cohen with 40% of the vote to Mosby’s 21% among likely primary voters surveyed.

Nilesh Kalyanaraman, the county health officer, tried to explain to me what treating gun violence as a threat to public health meant.
The Not-In-My-Backyard (NIMBY) syndrome, used to block infrastructure projects, is an extremely powerful force in our democracy. Some examples of projects that have been opposed by NIMBYs include affordable housing units, trailer parks, high-speed rail lines, daycare facilities, schools and bike lanes. When I was a senator, a fellow environmental leader was trying to block the proposed Lighthouse homeless shelter on West Street.
The easy part is over. Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed dozens of bills into law Tuesday — most fitting neatly into distinct categories of his agenda. Now the harder part comes: He’s got hundreds of bills that made it through the just-completed General Assembly session to review over the next six weeks. He has three bill signing ceremonies tentatively scheduled for April 25, May 9 and May 16. He can sign bills, veto them or let them become law without his signature.

Dawn Myers understands what it takes to style textured hair, and it’s not just because she’s a Black woman, a cancer survivor and a businesswoman. She’s also a problem solver. Myers, 38, said she founded her company, The Most Inc., five years ago when she saw many people — primarily women of color — struggling to manage their hair. All the while, major conglomerates were making money off the same group of customers without understanding them “well enough to solve their problems.”

The website includes details for affected workers and businesses. It also includes major traffic updates for commuters and guidance on in-person resources available through Maryland Business Recovery Centers.
