The Anne Arundel County Council passed a bill Monday that will require developers to allocate a portion of new units for moderate-income residents and create more diverse housing types in certain areas, in spite of environmental concerns raised by community members. Known as the Housing Attainability Act, the bill would require new housing developments with 20 or more units to designate 10% of for-sale units and 15% of rental units to be affordable.

Montgomery County Council members voted unanimously Tuesday to use $2 million in supplemental funding to help pay for installing vape detectors in the Maryland county’s public high schools. Ahead of the council’s 11-0 vote, members heard from community members who voiced their support and concerns regarding the issue of vaping and the reliability of the detectors.

The Carroll County Board of Education is set to approve construction plans and allocate funds for school projects that will span the next several years, at a public meeting Thursday. The school board typically holds a regular meeting on the second Wednesday of each month, but this month’s meeting was moved to Oct. 10.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday said she thinks former President Donald Trump has no empathy for others as he continues to spread misinformation about the federal response in the wake of Hurricane Helene. “It’s profound, and it is the height of irresponsibility and frankly callousness. … Lives are literally at stake right now,” Harris said during an interview on ABC’s “The View.”

What’s likely to be the only televised debate of the Maryland Senate election is scheduled to air on multiple platforms Thursday evening. As if we needed further proof that the contest between Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) and former Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is a big deal — and is attracting national attention — Chuck Todd, the former host of “Meet the Press” and chief NBC News political analyst is serving as the moderator.

After seeing coverage of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, two horsewomen in different states had the same thought: They had to help other farmers and horse owners like themselves. Each took action, independent of each other. In Maryland, Deana Tice, of En-Tice-Ment Stables in Harwood, figured she’d load up two 30-foot trailers with needed supplies for horses and their owners.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks and Republican Larry Hogan will meet Thursday in the only scheduled debate in a U.S. Senate contest competitive enough to attract attention and heavyweight donors from both national parties. In a state in which registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 2-1, Alsobrooks enters the debate at Maryland Public Television in Owings Mills leading Hogan by 48% to 39%, according to a UMBC poll released Wednesday that surveyed likely Maryland voters late last month.
