It was a good news, bad news deal for the OC Air Show this week. First, the event date change from mid-June to late-August is a major negative. The event will not be as successful and well received late in the season as it has been held in June for every year except 2020. The 2024 air show will likely be held the same week as the annual Jeep event, raising some logistical concerns with the daily beach parades, although the “Jeeps and Jets” marketing opportunity exists.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott will unveil an ambitious $3 billion plan Monday to attack the city’s thousands of vacant properties, promising to address a decades-old problem with funding from a newly created Tax Increment Financing zone and a yet-to-be-secured state investment. The proposal, which Scott plans to announce Monday evening alongside officials from the Greater Baltimore Committee and Baltimoreans United In Leadership Development, calls for a mix of public and private financing that would be used over 15 years to broaden the city’s existing approach to rehabilitating vacant properties.

The president of Maryland’s state Senate expressed concerns Friday about tying the Baltimore Orioles’ new lease at Camden Yards to an agreement on development near the ballpark. A spokesman for Gov. Wes Moore said the administration will work to address those concerns, with less than a month remaining before the team’s current lease expires.

When the Maryland Transit Administration launched Baltimore’s light rail service in 1992, it was with the understanding that its railcars would need a midlife overhaul after about 15 years. The recommended maintenance date came and went, and it wasn’t until 2013 that the MTA awarded a $150 million contract to multinational rail manufacturer Alstom to make the needed improvements on the fleet of more than 50 railcars.

The Baltimore Ravens flock faced some frustration after Sunday’s game amid a complete Light Rail shutdown. “It’s a long process. It’s confusing, and I’m ready to go home,” shuttle bus rider Marcere Brightman said. It was a sentiment felt by many Baltimoreans as they navigated a shuttle bus system in place of the Light Rail.

 

The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued an advisory about eating certain types of fish from local waterways over concerns about “forever chemicals.” The new advisory covers largemouth and smallmouth bass, sunfish, bluegill and white perch, according to the department. Officials say people do not need to avoid consuming these fish entirely, but should eat them in moderation.

Bethesda Row’s Paul Bakery and Terrain Cafe appear to have permanently closed this month. Terrain Cafe, located at 7228 Woodmont Ave. inside Anthropologie & Co., served a variety of light fare, including cocktails, cheese boards, toast burgers and salmon. “It is with great sadness that we permanently close the doors to Terrain Cafe in Bethesda, MD, effective November 29, 2023,” a statement on the cafe’s website read. “Thank you to our customers, neighbors, and employees for the years of support.”

 

An early entry into Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District race has announced she will withdraw and focus on issues before the General Assembly. Maryland House Ways and Means Chair Vanessa Atterbeary (D-Howard) announced her intention last month to run to succeed Rep. John Sarbanes (D), who is not seeking a 10th term.
