A work group created by Gov. Wes Moore to create safer roadway work zones announced final recommendations on Friday, such as deploying more state police in work zones and increasing fines for speeding. The recommendations include legislative, budgetary and administrative changes that also include lowering the temporary work zone speed limits, conducting more on-site inspections of work conditions, as well as adding more unmanned speed enforcement cameras and making sure current cameras are working.

A city panel told architects behind the $100 million redevelopment of a North Baltimore block to revamp their plans after they presented designs for new apartments, offices and a grocery retailer Thursday. Presenters designing two parcels of MCB Real Estate’s 8-acre Reservoir Square project off North and Park avenues showcased the layout for the project to the city’s Urban Design and Architecture Advisory Panel Thursday afternoon.

The number of tourists visiting Baltimore neared pre-pandemic levels last year but the dollars spent by those visitors still lagged 2019 figures by more than $2 billion.A Visit Baltimore report released on Wednesday shows 26.7 million people who visited the city in 2022 spent a combined $3.7 billion. That’s compared to 26.9 million visitors who spent dramatically more — about $6 billion — in 2019.

At a Wednesday meeting of Maryland Higher Education Commission, officials discussed how the implementation of Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, an education overhaul passed by the 2021 Maryland General Assembly, may drastically change how students are assessed for college and career readiness, among other topics.

MCB Real Estate is expanding its C-suite with the addition of a president who will focus on growth just as a $500 million private overhaul of Harborplace launches. Gina Baker Chambers will start in the newly created position at the Baltimore-based development and investment firm on Dec. 1. She has served as senior managing director and portfolio manager at Washington, D.C.-based Artemis Real Estate Partners for nine years and has worked with MCB co-founders P. David Bramble and Peter Pinkard since 2015 to help fund several projects.

Not since the glory days of the B&O Railroad has Baltimore been so much in the limelight of railroading as it has recently. Last week, it was President Joe Biden’s announcement of $16.4 billion in spending on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, a big chunk of which is headed to Charm City. On Monday, top Biden administration officials were back to talk with Gov. Wes Moore about a secondary benefit of all that spending including the $4.7 billion committed to create a new Frederick Douglass Tunnel through Baltimore — the chance to put a lot of young people on the right track toward high-paying transportation jobs (as a “workforce hub”) connected to such public investment.

State Sen. Karen Lewis Young said she plans to propose a bill giving student members of county school boards in the state a much broader baseline for voting rights. Lewis Young, a Democrat, said she and Democratic Del. Kris Fair want to propose legislation to require all student members of local school boards to have at least the same voting rights as the student member of the Maryland State Board of Education.
