This month marks the seven-year anniversary of the mysterious death of Baltimore homicide detective Sean Suiter, who, on Nov. 15, 2017, was shot in the head one day before he was scheduled to testify in a grand jury in a case involving the notorious Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF), a squad of criminal Baltimore police officers. Suiter’s case was featured in two HBO productions, a documentary called “The Slow Hustle” and David Simon’s scripted series, “We Own This City.”

Boeing machinists end strike after approving labor contract with 38% raises

Boeing machinists approved a new labor deal Monday, ending a costly seven-week strike that halted most of the company’s aircraft production, worsening its mounting losses. Machinists voted 59% in favor of the new contract, which includes 38% wage increases over four years and other improvements. The approval is a relief for Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who took the top job in August to steer the company through its safety and manufacturing crises.

Building company opens $9M headquarters

Wilmot Modular Structures Inc. recently moved into a new $9 million headquarters that will help support the company’s southern expansion. The White Marsh-based building company expects its new 33,000-square-foot complex to triple production. The new facility at 5812 Allender Road is on the same site where Wilmot Modular has been located for 35 years and replaces a 10,000-square-foot “maze” of randomly connected trailers that the company used for decades.

McDaniel College’s new BSN program to address nursing shortage in Carroll County

Leaders from LifeBridge Health and McDaniel College joined together Oct. 30 at Carroll Hospital in Westminster to announce a landmark partnership to address the nursing shortage in Carroll County and the surrounding region through McDaniel’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Beginning in fall 2026, McDaniel’s nursing program will be housed at Carroll Hospital, including offices, nursing classrooms, and labs, providing students with access to Carroll Hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities and early and frequent exposure to clinical work within a hospital setting.

Johnny Olszewski, Sarah Elfreth win congressional seats

Johnny Olszewski Jr., the two-term Democratic Baltimore County Executive, won his congressional bid to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, besting Republican Kim Klacik. State Sen. Sarah Elfreth, a Democrat, similarly defeated Republican Robert J. Steinberger in the race for U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes’ congressional seat.

Hopkins’ new Election Spending Dashboard helps track political spending

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) has launched an election spending data dashboard that makes it easy to see how much the two major political parties spend on campaign and committee expenditures. The Election Spending Dashboard provides public access to the federal records that track that political spending. The Johns Hopkins research team was led by political science professor Adam Sheingate, who developed the dashboard with a team of undergraduate research assistants.

Maryland voters appeared to overwhelmingly affirm their support for reproductive rights Tuesday, with early returns showing almost 74% of Marylanders voted to enshrine the right to an abortion and other reproductive freedoms into the Maryland Constitution. “Maryland voters have rightly chosen to protect their health and their futures.

Tiny houses in East Baltimore create new community for unhoused families

For Brittany Harvin and her daughter, housing instability ended Monday. That’s when she and a dozen other families moved into new 440-square-foot homes as part of an innovative housing initiative called Hope Village. Located at the intersection of Holbrook and East Hoffman streets, the colorful and tiny houses have been constructed in what was an old alleyway in Baltimore’s Oliver community.
