Allegany County has been named one of the “Best Places to Visit During Fall” in a USA Today 10Best poll. The county was one of 20 destinations picked by a panel of travel experts to compete in the USA Today readers poll to determine the “10Best” locations to visit for fall. Released Friday, Allegany County placed second behind Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in final voting.

Baltimore’s Little Italy and Harbor East neighborhoods as well as the city’s sports stadiums would move to new council districts under a redistricting plan unveiled Monday by Mayor Brandon Scott. The proposal, which still must be approved by the City Council, makes the heaviest alterations to Districts 1 and 11, currently represented by Councilmen Zeke Cohen and Eric Costello, respectively.

The Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office is working to publicly share data about sentences and plea offers in the cases it prosecutes. Frederick County and other Maryland jurisdictions will eventually have public “data dashboards” with information such as how case outcomes break down by race and ethnicity or number of new cases with defendants with prior criminal records.

The Robinwood complex resident stocks up on mouse traps and Clorox wipes to cope with a rodent problem that leaves her stove and dining room table littered with droppings. Sun-bleached notices from February 2022, November 2022 and February 2023 on her door testify to multiple visits from the City of Annapolis when her unit failed inspection, placing HACA’s license to lease the unit into an uncertain status.

 

 

Members of the Baltimore City Council voted Monday to advance a bill that would give the city’s law department the authority to take action against businesses that violate consumer protections. The ordinance — which covers unfair, abusive or deceptive trade practices involving goods, realty and services purchased and sold in the city — also enables the law department to impose and collect fines for civil penalties, according to a draft of the legislation.

The possibility of a historic health care worker strike inched closer to reality Monday after the union representing Kaiser Permanente employees in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., announced their members had voted last week to authorize a work stoppage to protest unfair labor practices if a labor agreement isn’t reached by Sept. 30.

As a Washington D.C. resident for the better part of a decade, Baltimore has always been near enough to envision a move there, and being in the medical field, training at one of the city’s fabled institutions has long been a personal dream. Now that I’ve started my internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins, it’s been such a pleasure experiencing many of the unique qualities that give Baltimore its charm.

Living in the land of plenty — as we are in the United States, in Maryland and here in Frederick County — it can be too easy to overlook those who do not share in the bounty. Our community is very lucky to have an organization like the United Way of Frederick County to remind us that too many of our neighbors are sometimes struggling just to get by. A lot of folks are working hard, trying to make their way, but are just one major repair bill away from economic trouble.

The sale of Kevin Plank’s Sagamore Spirit to an Italian multinational company has been in the works for years as the Under Armour founder sought to expand the Baltimore-based rye whiskey distillery’s reach across the globe. Plank has been seeking to raise the profile of his oak-barrel-aged whiskey company that was started in 2013 and announced Thursday that Illva Saronno Holding SpA had taken over as majority owner of Sagamore Spirit and would move its North American headquarters to Baltimore from New Jersey.

Public transportation across the state will be free on Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24, according to the Maryland Transit Administration. The free rides, offered in celebration of World Car Free Day, will include local buses, the light rail, the metro subway, MARC trains, commuter buses and mobility services. The free transit weekends will come during the Artscape street festival, a Ravens home game against the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore premiere of “The Wiz” at the Hippodrome Theatre.
