Steak and fries chain Medium Rare has closed its Baltimore location after less than a year in operation, according to founder Mark Bucher. Since the restaurant opened in Hampden’s Rotunda in November, “our losses were massive,” Bucher said, totaling $480,000. The restaurant — which originated in Washington, D.C., and has locations in Columbia and Bethesda, Dallas, New Orleans, and Arlington, Virginia — is “killing it everywhere else.”

The King of Jordan will visit the State House in Annapolis Wednesday to meet with Gov. Wes Moore, a rare visit from a head of state to Maryland’s capital city. Democratic Senate Candidate and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks is responding to recent reports that she had been improperly claiming tax credits for two homes that she owned. She told reporters Monday night that she was unaware of two tax credits, first reported by CNN, until a few days ago. One tax credit was for a townhome in Upper Marlboro that she began renting after moving out into another home in 2008. She received a homestead tax exemption for that house, which is only meant for primary residences.

“Can I come in through the back door?” or, “Please schedule my appointments so I don’t run into anyone I know.” These requests were routine early in my 40-year private practice as a clinical psychologist. Teachers didn’t want to encounter their students or students’ parents. Doctors wanted to avoid their patients. Students were uneasy about seeing classmates in the parking lot or on the stairwell even though those classmates had just completed a psychotherapy session themselves with my officemates or me.

Moore’s failure to correct the public record when he had opportunities to do so has drawn a considerable amount of criticism. I don’t know which accusation I find more annoying: That Moore’s failure to correct the record diminishes the significance of his military service, or that criticism of his failure to be more forthcoming constitutes an attack on his military service. Neither accusation is fair.

Newly released data from the Frederick County Suicide Prevention Coalition shows that deaths by suicide have continued trending slightly up in the county. As part of the 2023 Interim Community Health Assessment, the suicide prevention coalition released a deeper analysis of suicide deaths in Frederick County, revealing that the number of deaths from 2010 to 2021 has been increasing.

 

The state of Maryland on Tuesday joined a chorus of victims’ families, businesses and others who say they were harmed in Baltimore’s Key Bridge collapse to ask a federal judge not to cap the liability of the ship’s owner and operator, arguing that those responsible should fully pay for the disaster’s catastrophic damage.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland Farm Bureau, is reminding motorists to share the road with large farm equipment as the fall harvest season is beginning in the state. “As the days get shorter and farmers across the state begin to harvest their crops, motorists should expect to see large farm equipment along our rural roadways,” said State Highway Administrator Will Pines.

I was lost in a thicket of pawpaws and towering bittersweet vines at South River Farm Park.
