Boomers are not moving out of their big homes. Here’s why

After 33 years and four children, Baby Boomers Marta and Octavian Dragos say they feel trapped in what was once their dream home in El Cerrito, California. Both over 70, the Dragos are empty nesters, and like many of their generation, they’re trying to figure out how to downsize from their 3,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home. “We are here in a huge house with no family nearby, trying to make a wise decision, both financially and for our well-being,” said Dragos, a retired teacher.

Harborplace redevelopment plans could erase McKeldin Square. Some McKeldins aren’t pleased.

The plan to rejuvenate Baltimore’s Harborplace has rankled relatives of a man whose vision 60 years ago inspired redevelopment of the Inner Harbor. Four family members of former Baltimore Mayor Theodore McKeldin are asking the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation to intercede in the once-in-a-generation plan to modernize the city’s central-most public space. They’re seeking landmark designation for a portion of the city-owned property bearing their patriarch’s name, a move that would create another layer of oversight for an enormously consequential project.

County creating grant program for downtown businesses

Allegany County officials announced Thursday they are in the process of developing a grant program for downtown businesses. Several downtown businesses are struggling in the midst of an extensive 18-month construction project that has impeded access, caused water outages, and reduced customer patronage, according to multiple business owners. Dave Caporale, president of the Allegany County Board of Commissioners, announced the grant program at Thursday’s meeting of the board.

Downtown office tower sells at foreclosure auction for $25M

The 10-story 1 E. Pratt St. office tower near the Inner Harbor sold at a brisk foreclosure auction to an entity of Harborplace’s redevelopment team on Thursday for $25 million. The downtown landmark at Pratt and Light streets anchored by PNC Bank, Cushman & Wakefield, Gensler and Kona Grill sold to a single, unnamed bidder who Michael Nord, a trustee for the foreclosure, described as “the lender.” MCB Real Estate became the lender of the property last year after the firm acquired the note on the property.

Maryland had maintained the title of state with the lowest unemployment rate throughout the fall of 2023, though in December it shared the title with North Dakota, whose unemployment rate was also 1.9%.
