Q: What can the federal government do to support voting rights around the country?
A: We must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. We can, and must extend some the voting rights we enjoy in MD to the rest of our 50 states and territories.
Q: I am concerned about the unfinished Purple Line and when it will be complete.
A: I will make sure federal dollars are not in jeopardy. I have written letters to the Governor about this issue and will make sure it's a top priority in the next infrastructure package.
Q: Tell me about relief for small businesses?
A: We have streamlined and simplified access to aide in small business support. We've improved programs such as PPP and expanded eligibility categories. We have set aside money for community banks and minority lending institutions.
Q: How are you making our schools safe?
A: In our Relief Package, we secured $128.5 billion in grants for elementary and secondary school reopening and stabilization. We will do everything we can to re-open safely.
Q: Why was it important to pass the Equality Act today?
A: Let’s be clear, regardless of your sexual or gender orientation: all Americans should be treated equally and with dignity. I was proud to vote for this bill today.
Q: What are your top priorities on the Veterans Affairs Committee?
A: In the short term, I will ensure our Veterans are getting their benefits through the relief package. Veterans need direct cash assistance and we must ensure our senior Veterans get vaccinated.
Q: How will you address equity issues in the vaccine rollout?
A: MD's Equity Task Force will ensure we combat the digital divide and bring the vaccine to our communities instead of making communities of color seek the vaccine. It’s time to meet folks where they are.
