The Frederick biotechnology company BioFactura has announced $7.8 million in new contract activations to study a treatment for a potential smallpox outbreak. The company has gotten contract option activations worth $7.8 million by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, according to a news release Tuesday.

One of Maryland’s largest cannabis companies is expanding into the beverage market by creating an alternative to alcoholic seltzers. Cecil County-based SunMed Growers launched a brand of cannabis-infused drinks last week called Sunnies Socials, which are available in 50 dispensaries across the state. Founder Jake Van Wingerden believes drinks are a natural next step for cannabis companies, since many people may feel uncomfortable smoking in front of non-smokers.

For retailers and consumers finally feeling some relief from inflation, President-elect Donald Trump’s tariffs proposal introduces fresh uncertainty around how prices could change during his presidency, analysts said Wednesday. Trump, who NBC News projects won a second term in a decisive victory, said during his presidential campaign that he would impose a 10% to 20% tariff on all imports, including tariffs as high as 60% to 100% for goods from China.

Visit Harford Inc. is in line to receive county funding once again even as a legal battle between the county and the nonprofit tourism organization rages on. The Harford County Council passed a bill Tuesday that would more clearly establish Visit Harford as the county’s primary tourism organization and ensure it receives a portion of the county’s hotel occupancy tax.

Wilmot Modular Structures Inc. recently moved into a new $9 million headquarters that will help support the company’s southern expansion. The White Marsh-based building company expects its new 33,000-square-foot complex to triple production. The new facility at 5812 Allender Road is on the same site where Wilmot Modular has been located for 35 years and replaces a 10,000-square-foot “maze” of randomly connected trailers that the company used for decades.

Angeli’s Pizzeria Bar, a Baltimore-based family-owned restaurant group is assuming the former space occupied by Noona’s in The Fitzgerald, a 275-unit multifamily community owned and managed by MCB Real Estate. The pizzeria expects to open its fifth location in Baltimore, and second in the MCB Real Estate portfolio, at the 11-story residential project at 1201 W. Mt. Royal Ave. in December.
