Giant Food to close Hanover delivery warehouse, lay off 362

Giant Food plans to shut down its delivery warehouse in Hanover after more than four years in operation. The 150,000-square-foot warehouse at 1020A Airport 100 Way in Hanover is a major hub for the grocer’s Giant Delivers home delivery service. The closure is scheduled for Oct. 21 and will entail 362 layoffs, according to a plant closure notice filed on Maryland’s Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) log.

Clean energy project completed in Anne Arundel County

Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) and officials from the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) and Standard Solar officially celebrated the completion of a solar project providing clean energy to the Bureau of Utility Operations (BUO) Complex in Millersville. The event highlighted the capital project that consists of a combination of four carports and seven rooftop solar arrays, producing 1.3 megawatts (MW) of power.

Checkerspot Brewing Co. moves into new South Baltimore building

Following extensive renovations over the last nine months, a South Baltimore brewery is ready for its new space. Checkerspot Brewing Co. has moved from its original space a few blocks away to 1421 Ridgley St. and will open the new facility on Sept. 1. While the brewery has grown in size and hopes to expand production, the owners are bringing the same personal style that customers have grown to know over its five years in business.

Southwest pilots to picket at BWI, across the country as contract talks continue

Over 1,200 Southwest Airlines Co. pilots will picket in Baltimore and at airports across the country on Thursday to show their frustration with negotiations for a new union contract that have dragged on for more than three years. Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, also known as SWAPA, is organizing the pickets for Aug. 31, the three-year anniversary of its members not having a contract.

MCA to create state-run cannabis testing lab to combat fraud

The Maryland Cannabis Administration is launching a state-run lab to ensure the safety of the drug in response to product recalls and testing fraud in the cannabis industry. The Board of Public Works approved a lease for the new lab in Baltimore on Aug. 23. The Maryland Cannabis Administration or MCA will pay roughly $268,000 a year to lease a 5,934 square foot space at 6200 Seaforth Ave. at the Holabird Industrial Park in Southeast Baltimore, starting March 2024.

Former hotel tower in Downtown Baltimore headed to auction as owner seeks new financing

The former Embassy Suites Inner Harbor Hotel downtown will hit the auction block next month as its owner seeks to reset his financing to convert the tower into apartments. The 37-story building at 222 St. Paul Place will go to auction at 11 a.m. on Sept. 20 on the front steps of the Clarence M. Mitchell Courthouse. A $300,000 deposit is required to bid, according to Alex Cooper Auctioneers, which is heading the sale.

Baltimore County shoe company raises $500K to launch new product

A kids’ shoe company started by a former Mizuno and Adidas executive recently raised $500,000 to bring its shoes to a broader audience. Baltimore County-based Jbrds has sold close to 3,600 pairs of shoes since launching its first product last summer. CEO Mike Gugat said one reason for the company’s success is that Jbrds approaches kids’ shoes differently by building them based on a child’s development.

Under Armour has a new CEO and a new three-year plan to boost profitability. On Tuesday, executives touted both as key to boosting the Baltimore-based sports brand’s popularity and sales, especially in the U.S. home market. During the company’s annual shareholder meeting, held virtually, Under Armour managers reinforced their commitment to strengthen the brand’s appeal, especially in the U.S. and elevate design of footwear, women’s apparel and an expanded “sportstyle” category.

Nearly entire city block on Baltimore’s west side sells for $48.4M at auction

Nearly an entire block downtown sold back to its lender for $48.4 million on Tuesday after a public auction on the courthouse steps drew a bidding war. Two bidders drove the price of the three large parcels up from the opening bid of $45.7 million during the 30-minute auction. A representative for the lender, Fannie Mae, successfully bid $48,425,000 to retain title to the properties in a bidding war against a group of investors from Chantilly, Virginia.

Baltimore’s Capital Funding Group closes $7.2M for refinancing of Ohio skilled nursing facility

Baltimore-based Capital Funding Group (CFG) announced the closing of a $7.2 million HUD loan, which supported the refinancing of an existing bridge loan, executed by CFG, into a HUD loan to support a 75-bed skilled nursing facility in Ohio. The deal was closed Aug. 17 on behalf of a nationally recognized borrower.
