BWI-Marshall is a finalist in contest for best restroom

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is a finalist in the 2023 America’s Best Restroom contest. The 22nd-annual contest, sponsored by Cintas Corp., celebrates businesses that develop and maintain innovative restroom facilities, according to a statement released by the airport. BWI-Marshall is the only airport among the contest finalists. Other finalists include highway rest areas, restaurants, tourist destinations and private companies.

Meal kit company Home Chef opens manufacturing and distribution center in Baltimore, plans to add 600 jobs

Meal kit and food delivery company Home Chef has opened a new manufacturing and distribution center in Baltimore, its first location on the East Coast. The facility in Wagner’s Point in South Baltimore will add about 600 jobs to Baltimore, said Home Chef chief operating officer Scott Fratzke at a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday.

 

After a Baltimore neighborhood lost its grocery store, a local deli expanded its offerings

In the wake of Eddie’s of Mount Vernon closing, another neighborhood spot has stepped up to help fill the void the longtime grocer left behind. The Spot Pizzeria & Deli at 1101 St. Paul St. has expanded its offerings of items like fresh produce and canned goods since the end of June. Eddie’s closed on June 29 at 7 W. Eager St. after 24 years, leaving the neighborhood without a local grocery store.

Real Estate Insider: Arundel Mills adds five new retailers as shoppers return

The 250 retailers at Arundel Mills just got some company. The Hanover-based mega mall off Route 100 recently inked five new leases with national retailers as the volume of in-person shopping is on the rise post-Covid, mall officials said. Opening this summer are an Adidas Outlet, The North Face, a Vera Bradley store, Velocity Denim and Hollister.

Morgan State president says Towson University duplicated business degree program, asks legislators to intervene

The president of Morgan State University called on legislators to intervene after Towson University was given approval to start a business degree program that he says is similar to one at Morgan State. Morgan State President David K. Wilson wrote in a June 30 letter to Democratic State Sen. Brian J Feldman and Del. Vanessa E. Atterbeary that Towson University seems to be attempting to gain R2 status, a classification of high research activity, by copying Morgan State’s programs.

Employers add 209,000 jobs in June, a slow but steady gain

The U.S. economy added 209,000 jobs in June, the smallest pickup in jobs since December 2020, signaling a slowing but still strong labor market. June’s job gains fell short of economists’ predictions, indicating that the labor market is cooling down from its peak last year. The unemployment rate fell slightly to 3.6 percent, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Friday.

Baltimore judge extends temporary ban on BGE’s external gas pressure equipment

A Baltimore judge has tacked 60 days onto an order requiring Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. to temporarily halt the installation of external gas pressure regulators without homeowners’ consent and to restore gas services to residents who object to the equipment’s placement. Circuit Court Judge John S. Nugent on Friday denied BGE’s motion to cancel a preliminary injunction hearing that was scheduled for Monday.

As the summer heats up, so does the job market for teens

This week’s jobs report showed there are far more openings than people to fill them. Now, more businesses are turning to teens to fill open roles this summer. “I don’t know really any industry that’s not actively hiring right now, for big and small roles,” said Patrick Morrissey, the Chief Growth Officer with recruiting firm HireVue.

Nursing home workers at Autumn Lake facility in Baltimore vote to unionize amid complaints of hourly pay

Workers at a northwest Baltimore nursing home have voted to join one of the largest health care unions in the country, becoming the latest health care workers in the Baltimore-Washington corridor to seek union representation in recent months. Employees at Autumn Lake Healthcare’s Arlington West facility voted 34-1 in favor of joining 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU) United Healthcare Workers East in late May.
