Departures of Flying Dog, Guinness reflect industry trends, experts say

Weeks after Guinness filed plans to shutter its Baltimore County manufacturing plant, Flying Dog Brewery this week announced it will close its Frederick facility. But the departures are more indicative of industry trends than of a brewery problem in the state, say industry experts. Guinness’s parent company, Diageo North America, plans to close its Baltimore County site on June 9, according to a March filing with the Maryland Department of Labor.

Why you can count Montgomery County out on a new stadium for the Commanders

Montgomery County native Josh Harris is closing in on a purchase of the Washington Commanders. His group of limited partners includes a slate of businessmen who also have deep ties to the suburban Maryland county, including Danaher Corp. co-founder and Glenstone owner Mitchell Rales, serial investor Mark Ein and Michael Sapir, CEO of Bethesda’s ProShares. Given all those deep-pocketed local connections, is the county interested in getting in the game for the Commanders’ next stadium?

Meet this year’s winning companies and learn what it takes to create a great workplace

If your workplace was a fictional company or TV show, which one would it be? That’s one of the questions we asked this year’s Best Places to Work winning companies as part of our Mad Libs-themed special section. We got a variety of answers but the most popular response was “Cheers,” a.k.a. the place where everybody knows your name. The Orioles on Monday unveiled their City Connect uniforms, paying tribute to Baltimore with a uniform that, like the city, has more to it than what’s visible from outside. With a black uniform featuring much of its color on the interior — which the club noted with pride is a first — the Orioles became the 19th team to participate in the City Connect series, part of a partnership between Major League Baseball and Nike. Orioles players and coaches will first wear the uniforms in a game Friday night against the Texas Rangers.

Bethesda-based property technology firm Brivo Inc. has landed a $92 million equity investment from the multi-billion-dollar Tokyo security company Secom Co. Ltd. The funding deal, announced Wednesday, comes less than a year after Brivo’s plans to go public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company fell apart amid a downturn in the financial markets that caused many such deals to collapse. That deal, which was terminated in August, was expected to net Brivo about $304 million.

Giant Food to open new grocery store in Baltimore County

Giant Food will open a new store at a Baltimore County retail center, taking over an anchor space from another grocer that’s set to close this summer.
