When a shopping mall closes, what becomes of the art inside?

The world’s oldest sculpture is estimated to have been created about 40,000 years ago. Robert Perless’s “Monad” — a shiny metal blade 32 feet tall — is considerably newer. Perless made it in 1978 for Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, Md. Will it stand the test of time? Forget 40,000 years. Some people worry “Monad” may not be around in four years. Lakeforest Mall closed at the end of March. Its new owners hope to redevelop the 100-acre site.

Departures of Flying Dog, Guinness reflect industry trends, experts say

Weeks after Guinness filed plans to shutter its Baltimore County manufacturing plant, Flying Dog Brewery this week announced it will close its Frederick facility. Guinness’s parent company, Diageo North America, plans to close its Baltimore County site on June 9, according to a March filing with the Maryland Department of Labor.

Given all those deep-pocketed local connections, is the county interested in getting in the game for the Commanders’ next stadium?

Meet this year’s winning companies and learn what it takes to create a great workplace

If your workplace was a fictional company or TV show, which one would it be? That’s one of the questions we asked this year’s Best Places to Work winning companies as part of our Mad Libs-themed special section. We got a variety of answers but the most popular response was “Cheers,” a.k.a. the place where everybody knows your name. Perhaps it’s not surprising that amid all the uncertainty of the last few years, employees are giving high marks to organizations that make an effort to know them personally rather than just seeing them as another line on a spreadsheet.

Orioles unveil City Connect uniforms, with colorful interior reflecting Baltimore’s neighborhoods

The Orioles on Monday unveiled their City Connect uniforms, paying tribute to Baltimore with a uniform that, like the city, has more to it than what’s visible from outside. With a black uniform featuring much of its color on the interior — which the club noted with pride is a first — the Orioles became the 19th team to participate in the City Connect series, part of a partnership between Major League Baseball and Nike. Orioles players and coaches will first wear the uniforms in a game Friday night against the Texas Rangers.
