Maryland Innovation Lab aims to pair local companies with international startups

A new program plans to bring international investment to Maryland by giving foreign startups a taste of the region’s economy through partnerships with local businesses. The Maryland Innovation Lab is a collaboration among the state Department of Commerce, the World Trade Center Institute in Baltimore, and London company L Marks, Gov. Wes Moore said in an announcement on Friday.

Hopkins startup teams earn $16K in pitch competition

MiraHeart, a student startup team from Johns Hopkins University working to prevent the progression of pediatric heart failure, finished third at the 2023 Heartland Challenge. MiraHeart is a novel, noninvasive monitoring technology for central venous pressure (CVP), which is critical for adjusting heart failure medications and treatments. MiraHeart can be implemented at home, removing required trips to a clinical setting for monitoring CVP in children.

Ocean City gets ready to welcome upscale resort on beachfront Fontainebleau property

New owners of Ocean City’s Fontainebleau Resort are getting ready to reopen the nearly 50-year-old oceanfront landmark as the Ashore Resort & Beach Club — complete with upscale amenities and suites. It’s all part of a new trend where upscale lodging options are taking hold in the beach town famous for visitors having to shell out $300 a night for a scraggly room.

On a sunny spring afternoon, tourists and visitors flock to the National Aquarium and other Inner Harbor attractions while upscale restaurants in nearby Harbor East prepare for the dinner crowd. Complaints on the rise alleging deceptive practices by third-party gas and electric suppliers in Maryland

Complaints have spiked against gas and electric suppliers in Maryland’s competitive energy marketplace, prompting heavy scrutiny in recent weeks from regulators looking to root out deceptive tactics. The Maryland Public Service Commission has launched an unprecedented enforcement blitz that could lead to suppliers being prosecuted, fined or having their licenses revoked. The effort is expected to last through August.

Baltimore city job fair draws hundreds to Chick Webb Rec Center Saturday; another scheduled soon

A job fair hosted by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works drew hundreds to the Chick Webb Recreation Center in the Dunbar-Broadway neighborhood Saturday. Department of Public Works Chief Administrative Officer Deepti Modha said the department is hiring for a host of positions including truck drivers, laborers and solid waste workers, as well as for various types of apprenticeships.

Perkins Homes redevelopment gets $10M federal grant

The large-scale overhaul of the Perkins Homes site in East Baltimore has snagged another federal grant. The Housing Authority of Baltimore City, or HABC, and a group of private developers this week were awarded $10 million by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help fund a third phase of the Perkins Homes redo. The funds will be added to a previous $30 million grant from HUD in 2018.

Great Wolf Lodge Maryland opening in June, looking to fill 700 positions

Great Wolf Lodge Maryland’s opening has been pushed up to June 29. Progress on the new resort coming to Perryville is moving swiftly. It was previously scheduled to open in August, then during a construction tour in February, the company announced it would open on July 15. Families are now able to book stays at the lodge for June 29 and beyond, including the Fourth of July weekend, according to Mackenzie Fox, a spokesperson for Great Wolf Lodge.

Baltimore developer enters Florida with regional Tampa office

Another Baltimore developer has moved into the Florida market. St. John Properties said Thursday its latest national expansion will be into Central Florida. The Woodlawn-based firm has opened an office in Industrious, a coworking facility in downtown Tampa, and is eyeing projects in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco and Polk counties.
