Tesla retreat from EV charging leaves growth of U.S. network in doubt

Tesla’s abrupt decision to lay off its electric-vehicle charging team and reduce its investments in public charging is a blow to the U.S. network, which has long relied on Elon Musk to build the bulk of the country’s fast chargers. The sudden layoffs this week left Tesla construction vendors uncertain whether to carry on with the charging projects they were building, though one vendor said the company has since confirmed that existing projects should continue.

MCB Real Estate launches $115M retail, housing project

MCB Real Estate has launched another project in fast-growing Charles County with a $115 million mixed-use development in Waldorf to be anchored by an expansion of Weis Markets into the area. Officials of the prolific Baltimore developer also planning a redo of Harborplace said they are bullish on the once-rural Southern Maryland county seen as an affordable alternative to the pricy cost of living in Washington, D.C., 30 miles away. At a groundbreaking for The Shops at Fairway Village held Thursday morning, MCB officials said the project, with its 186 apartment units, will help add more housing to the area.

Shear will: Wool goes from sheep to shawl at a beloved Maryland festival

At the 51st annual Maryland Sheep and Wool festival, six teams have three hours to shear a sheep, spin the wool it into yarn, then weave those threads into a showstopping shawl. Inside the fairgrounds, past the sheep show ring, the sheep milk stand, the sheep jewelry artist, the sheep photo display and the barn full of sheep, the fiercest competition in sheepdom has begun. At the 51st annual Maryland Sheep and Wool festival, six teams have three hours to shear a sheep, transform its wool into yards of yarn, then weave those threads into a showstopping shawl.

‘Icon of Talbot County’ is looking for new ownership

The Oxford Bellevue Ferry is open and ready for the 2024 season. Capts. Judy and Tom Bixler are sailing through the waters to provide residents and tourists a chance to experience this “Icon of Talbot County.” Judy Bixler said she and her husband have been leading the ferry for over 20 years. Now, they are looking to find someone to whom they can pass on the legacy of the ferry, someone who will maintain its historic status.

Aldermen approve $2M expenditure, payment in lieu of tax agreement for The Junction development

The Junction, a proposed 179-unit affordable housing project consisting of two buildings on either side of West South Street, could receive property tax breaks and $2 million in city funds after separate votes from Frederick’s aldermen.

Johns Hopkins plans 26,000-square-foot child care center

Johns Hopkins University plans to replace a child care facility that will be demolished to make way for a massive artificial intelligence center with a much larger facility in North Baltimore. The university presented plans for a replacement building for the Homewood Early Learning Center to the city’s Urban Design and Architecture Advisory Panel on Thursday.

BWI Marshall raises parking rates for first time in 15 years

BWI Marshall Airport has the lowest parking rates among the D.C. region’s three airports, but those rates are going up this summer. Long-term parking will go from $8 per day to $11 per day after July 1, which is the least expensive parking option at BWI Marshall. It’s the equivalent of economy parking at Dulles International, which is $14 per day, and economy parking at Reagan National, which is $19 per day.

Rockville-based Narcan maker Emergent is cutting hundreds of jobs

Rockville-based Emergent BioSolutions is eliminating 300 jobs and will not fill 85 current job openings, as part of a broad restructuring that also includes closing manufacturing facilities, including one in the Maryland city. Emergent also reported quarterly revenue of $300 million, almost double revenue in the same quarter a year ago, and a $9 million profit, compared to steep losses in the first quarter of 2023.

David Rubenstein pitches Camden Yards, Baltimore to D.C. execs

David Rubenstein wants Washington, D.C., executives to make the trip to Oriole Park at Camden Yards and potentially sponsor his new team, and he is opening up the owner’s box to try and help his cause. Rubenstein, the Baltimore native turned Washington mogul who purchased the Baltimore Orioles earlier this year, invited members of the Economic Club of Washington D.C. to join him for a game in Baltimore during one of the club’s events Tuesday night.

Some of Dali’s $43.7M worth of cargo sits in Curtis Bay; remaining containers’ fate uncertain

Thousands of shipping containers on the Dali, the 984-foot cargo vessel that struck and destroyed the Francis Scott Key Bridge more than a month ago, face an uncertain fate. About 180 of the 4,700 containers have been removed from the ship and taken to a CSX rail yard in Curtis Bay, while the rest, both full and empty, remain stacked on board as the vessel owner, shipping line and cargo customers negotiate who ultimately will cover the costs of the salvaging operation.
