Family-owned hardware stores to change hands after 179 years

A local hardware store will have a new name for the first time since 1845. Clarks Ace Hardware, which owns Ace Hardware shops in Ellicott City and Columbia, has agreed to an acquisition deal with Kansas City’s Westlake Ace Hardware. Clarks has been in the Clark family for seven generations since opening as a farm supply store in Ellicott City more than 175 years ago.

University of Maryland plans outpatient growth with new for-profit arm

The University of Maryland Medical School is creating a for-profit entity to add a new revenue stream and establish a network of primary care doctors. The for-profit will be an arm of the University of Maryland Faculty Physicians Inc., a group of over 1,200 medical school faculty who offer clinical care across the state. The new business structure will allow the University of Maryland to utilize private financing and new reimbursement structures.

Historic Markley Hotel will be redeveloped as small business, retail hub with student housing next door

People in Baltimore’s Lauraville and Beverly Hills neighborhoods have long known the sprawling brick building in the 4500 block of Harford Road as The Markley Hotel, though it’s not clear whether it ever hosted overnight guests. A new chapter is starting for the former D. Markley Supply Co. seed and general store and warehouse as a community hub, with student housing for Morgan State University next door.

The Mint Room opening new location at Columbia Palace Plaza

The ownership group of The Mint Room, which operates three restaurants specializing in traditional delicacies from northern India, has chosen Columbia Palace Plaza in Columbia as the site of its first quick-service restaurant (QSR) concept. The restaurant chain, owned by Prince Anand, has signed a lease with Continental Realty Corporation (CRC) for 2,500 square feet of space within the Giant Food-anchored center and plans to open later this year.

Businesses worry about extended Baltimore port shutdown, Federal Reserve says

The shutdown of vessel traffic in and out of Baltimore’s harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse March 26 has caused shipping delays but so far no widespread price increases, a Federal Reserve report says. Businesses said they can manage a short-term disruption but are concerned about an extended shutdown, according to the Federal Reserve’s April 17 Beige Book report.

Amid the ever-changing cannabis industry landscape, MariMed, a seed-to-store operation in Maryland, has received top honors in multiple categories at the 2024 Maryland Cannabis Awards. MariMed’s product, Betty’s Eddies, an all-natural cannabis fruit chew, was named Favorite Edible, and Nature’s Heritage, a flower brand, received top accolades for their Rick Simpson Oil. MariMed celebrated its 10th anniversary, a monumental achievement for a cannabis company.

Silver Diner will open its latest location in Baltimore County.

A popular Rockville-based diner chain is moving up the Interstate 95 corridor with a new location in Baltimore County. Silver Diner will open its newest restaurant at 8123 Honeygo Blvd. at the Avenue at White Marsh on May 1. The diner will be the third Greater Baltimore location for the company, which hopes to expand further throughout the area and into Pennsylvania.

Maryland ranks sixth in states struggling with hiring, study says

Maryland ranks sixth on a list of states facing challenges filling job vacancies, according to a recent study by WalletHub.  “Many businesses in Maryland are still experiencing labor shortages,” said Cassandra Happe, an analyst at WalletHub, in an interview with WTOP. “They have this comparatively high job openings rate, both in the latest month and over the last 12 months.”

After Key Bridge collapse, local truckers say they’re overworked, fearful

A Maryland-based gym that offers accessible fitness classes and facilities to people of all abilities, is expanding into Northern Virginia. SPIRIT Club founder Jared Ciner said many gyms aren’t designed in a way that allow people of varying levels of physical or mental ability to participate comfortably. “It could be anything from the environment itself — the culture of the gym might not be one that is welcoming,” Ciner said.
