Maryland vineyard goes carbon-negative for its wines

The Dodon Vineyards in Davidsonville, Maryland, spans 17 acres of centuries-old farmland. It was founded in the 1700s and for centuries it served as a tobacco plantation, before switching to corn, soybeans and other crops in the 1960s. Today, there’s row after row of grapes. Some bunches are a deep, dark purple while others are the lighter, greener variety.

Truist Maryland regional president announces retirement after 45-year career

Truist Regional President Greg Farno on Thursday announced his retirement after more than 45 years in banking. He will be succeeded by Evelyn Lee, a Baltimore native, who’s expanded role after being promoted from executive vice president, includes oversight of Maryland and greater Washington. Farno and Lee will work together to ensure a smooth transition.

 

The four-day workweek gains another prominent champion

The four-day workweek has gained another champion — this time, it’s the United Auto Workers union. UAW President Shawn Fain laid out a 32-hour workweek as one of the many proposals for a new contract with the largest three American auto manufacturers, as well as a 40% increase in pay, boosted pensions and other items. The union already authorized a strike, and the contract runs out Sept. 14.

Baltimore’s liquor board approved a new liquor license in Keswick on Thursday despite the impassioned objections of some residents and a city councilwoman. Several locals opposed the license for the former Evergreen Cafe on West Cold Spring Lane on the grounds that after a year of negotiations, owner Binod “Milo” Uprety had not signed a memorandum of understanding with local groups, whereby businesses agree to certain restrictions.

On Sunday, the Washington Commanders take the field for the first regular season home game under their new owners, a group led by Greater Washington natives Josh Harris and Mitch Rales. On Wednesday night, Harris and Rales made their debut before the region’s business community — and, as you can imagine, it was something of a home crowd.

Is financial stress hurting retirement savings? 4 in 10 workers with a 401(k) don’t contribute, CNBC survey finds

Most Americans will have to rely on their savings to fund their retirement, but financial stress makes it hard for many workers to save. A new CNBC Your Money Survey conducted by SurveyMonkey found that 74% of Americans are feeling financially stressed, up from 70% in an April survey. About 37% of respondents indicated that they are “very stressed” about their personal finances, compared to only 30% in April.

Honeygrow to open three more Baltimore-area restaurants

A fast-casual chain known for its salad and stir fry is opening three more Greater Baltimore locations this year. Honeygrow’s newest restaurants are coming to Columbia, Timonium and Annapolis by the end of this fall. The planned restaurants will bring the company’s Maryland spots to nine, with eight being in Greater Baltimore.

BWI security wait times among shortest for big airports, but delays are frequent

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has shorter security wait times than the rest of the nation’s busiest airports, according to a recent study by travel company PlanetWare, but the flight hub ranks lower in delays and cancelations. With an average wait time of 5.1 minutes, BWI Airport claimed the No. 1 spot for shortest average wait time among 31 airports with the highest average passenger volumes.

Columbia cyber firm acquired by government contracting giant in deal worth up to $200M

Columbia cyber company Sealing Technologies Inc. is now part of one of the country’s largest government contractors after a deal worth up to $200 million. Centreville, Virginia-based Parsons Corp. (NYSE: PSN) hopes to leverage Sealing Tech’s expertise to boost its artificial intelligence products, add new government clients and establish a stronger foothold in the expanding cybersecurity industry. Sealing Tech will be a standalone subsidiary within Parsons.
