With 50 years of history, YouthWorks provides opportunities for young people in Baltimore

Baltimore’s YouthWorks program began its 50th year of operations this week. The month-long initiative aims to address violence and poverty among city youth, and now serves as a template for cities around the country working on similar objectives. YouthWorks is spearheaded by the Baltimore City Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, which works to place Baltimore residents ages 14 to 21 in various workplaces around the city for five weeks. Participants will earn Maryland’s current minimum wage of $13.25 an hour.

 

Two Maryland resorts among Travel + Leisure’s Best in Mid-Atlantic 2023

Two Maryland hotels have made Travel + Leisure’s list of the top 10 resorts in the mid-Atlantic. The Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore came in at no. 4 on the 2023 list while the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel ranked No. 8. The Inn at Perry Cabin has ranked every year since the list debuted while the Annapolis hotel made the list for the first time this year.

Hagerstown’s new ballpark: Picnic areas, walking paths and high expectations

From the corner of West Baltimore Street and Summit Avenue, you can see the future of baseball in the Hub City. There aren’t any home runs flying yet. But next Spring, the cranes and construction workers will be gone. The 6.25-acre site in Downtown Hagerstown will be changed into a ballpark with a capacity for about 3,000 fans. It will be a ballpark that reflects the history and traditions of this hard-working city of 43,000 people, according to planners.

Lidl is closing its store in Brooklyn Park on Sunday, company officials said this week.

As German grocer Lidl closes one Baltimore-area store, another may finally be set to open. The discount grocery chain announced on Tuesday it was shuttering its store in Brooklyn Park in Anne Arundel County on Sunday because it was “underperforming.” However, early next year, the company is eyeing the grand opening of another local Lidl at 5950 Belair Road in Northeast Baltimore to replace a long-time independent market, spokesman Chandler Spivey said.

$40M set for cannabis business owners in communities hurt by criminalization

The Maryland Department of Commerce is set to grant $40 million to cannabis business owners who for a certain number of years have lived or attended school in communities where charges for possession of the drug have been disproportionately high. Beginning Aug. 1, eligible businesses that aren’t yet operational but are pre-approved for a license before Oct. 1, 2022, can apply for up to $5 million, which they can choose to receive as a lump sum or as a no-interest loan with a five-year term.

 

Maryland moves up in CNBC’s Top States for Business ranking

Maryland once again ranked in the middle of the pack on CNBC’s new Top States for Business ranking released Tuesday, but improved compared to last year. The Old Line State came in at No. 22, up five spots from the year prior. Maryland has traditionally placed in the middle of CNBC’s annual ranking but did rank as high as No. 12 in 2021, when it also took the title of most improved state.

Leading operations at the 2 Locust Lane, Westminster, location will be RL Kyker, a loan officer with more than 17 years of experience working in the Maryland community in mortgage finance.

Hotel workers at Baltimore Marriott Waterfront get raises through newly ratified contract

Hotel workers at Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in Harbor East will get their first raises in more than two years and improved workplace rights under a newly ratified contract, the workers’ union announced Tuesday. The contract ends a labor dispute that started more than a year and a half ago. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the first full union contract since the food and beverage workers organized at the hotel in 2019, non-tipped workers get immediate hourly wage increases that range from $1.56 to $2.76, the union, Unite Here Local 7, said Tuesday.

Mini golf chain Puttshack headed to Chasen Cos. project in Harbor East

Puttshack, an upscale miniature golf chain that combines high-tech putt putt courses and bars, will open inside The Whitney in Harbor East, an apartment complex being developed by Baltimore’s Chasen Cos. The luxury mini golf venue in the fast-developing Baltimore neighborhood will be the first in Maryland for the Chicago company, which launched a national expansion last year to cash in on the “competitive socializing” market.
