Pilot program to divert thousands of behavioral crisis calls from police to crisis hotline starts next month in Baltimore
This is a pretty big deal in a City that had put its lion's share of money into policing to answer just about everything

We need systemic changes to ensure true public safety. Not every emergency requires a police response. Was proud to join @MayorBMScott as he launched a 911 diversion program for those experiencing behavioral health crises. @RepKarenBass & I are urging others to adopt this model.
Under a pilot program run by the Baltimore City government and a behavioral health nonprofit, some 911 calls are to be diverted to social workers and clinicians. https://bit.ly/3esC7ic

In honor of #FallenHeroesDay, I encourage us to take a moment to commemorate the brave men and women who have lost their lives protecting our great city and country. They will always remain on our minds and in our hearts.
Baltimore is home to world-class medical institutions, and we can deliver premier clinical care to residents experiencing behavioral health & substance use crises. I look forward to growing our public health diversion options over time, in partnership with community-based orgs.
Residents will be able to access the program by simply calling 911. Eligible calls will be connected to a trained mental health clinician at the Here2Help line, rather than BPD or EMS. Residents can access the free, confidential Here2Help line 24-hours a day at 410-433-5175.
