Seafood Watch, a well-known consumer guide about sustainable seafood, has released its latest draft and is telling people to avoid eating wild caught oysters that come from the Bay. A look at the draft shows the bay as being overfished and poorly managed, adding “current abundance levels in the Chesapeake Bay overall are still low.

Under new leadership, Greater Baltimore Committee seeks to give region competitive edge through 10-year plan

With a new leader at the helm, the Greater Baltimore Committee plans to develop a 10-year strategy to transform the city and region into a top national market for business and economic development. The GBC has been shifting direction since last year, merging with the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore, a move that linked two regional business advocacy groups, and taking on a new president and CEO in December after a national search.

Bethesda’s Routespring receives TEDCO funding to bring more AI to the travel industry

Routespring, a Bethesda AI-powered business travel management company, is looking to go up against the major travel agencies, now boosted by a $500,000 investment from the Maryland Technology Development Corp. (TEDCO). Founded by CEO Tarun Upaday and CTO Hitesh Sharma, Routespring uses a proprietary AI algorithm to determine such factors as the length, price and risk in travel routes for companies whose workers must travel for their job, like pilots, travel nurses, truck drivers and cruise ship employees.

States see record low unemployment across the U.S.

Across much of the country, the jobs market is as strong as it’s ever been, and Black women, young people and people with disabilities are among the workers benefiting, recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show. Twenty states reported an unemployment rate under 3% in April, while 15 states saw record lows, led by South Dakota at 1.9%, followed by Nebraska at 2%, and New Hampshire and North Dakota at 2.1%.

BWI-Marshall’s Long Term A parking lot closes ahead of Memorial Day weekend

Parking is tight at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport’s lots ahead of Memorial Day weekend. SkyTeam 11 got a look at BWI-Marshall’s Long Term A parking lot, which is filled to capacity. As of Thursday afternoon, the airport website showed Long Term A was closed and Long Term B had 57% of spaces available.

Debt ceiling talks make progress, but House will leave town with no deal

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday that negotiations over raising the U.S. debt limit were progressing toward a deal despite disagreements over spending, with only eight days before the government could face an unprecedented default. That urgency became more apparent later Wednesday. Fitch Ratings, one of the big three ratings agencies, placed the United States’ triple-A status on “rating watch negative.”

California cannabis brand to open first Maryland dispensary in Federal Hill

A California cannabis brand is expanding into Maryland with the opening of its first cannabis dispensary in Baltimore later this week. Cookies will open a location at 35 E Cross St. in Federal Hill on Saturday, May 27. The dispensary will be open for medical patients, but the company plans to transition to the recreational market, which will go live in Maryland on July 1.
